Death counters for Elden Ring, Minecraft and more

Some games are made for a death counter. Whether it is Malenia, a Minecraft Hardcore world or a Celeste chapter, a number on screen turns every failed attempt into part of the show.

Vision account required. You build the overlay in the editor. · Updated

A look inside the Vision editor. The complete setup is explained in text below.

How it works

What you need for a game death counter

Add a Score layer in Vision, label it Deaths and add the overlay to OBS as a Browser Source. Count by hand, let a moderator count from their own browser, or set up a chatbot command like !death that adds 1 to the counter. For boss-heavy games, add a second counter for the current boss.

  • OBS Studio and a Vision account
  • A Score layer for your total, and optionally one for the current boss
  • Optional: a moderator or a chatbot command to do the counting

Step by step

Set up the death counter for your game

  1. Add the counter

Open or create an overlay in Vision and add a Score layer with the + button. Label it Deaths and set the start value to 0, or enter the total from your earlier streams.

  2. Add a boss counter if you need one

For Elden Ring, Hollow Knight or Cuphead, add a second Score layer, for example Malenia or Current boss. Reset it when the boss is down and keep the total running.

  3. Add the overlay to OBS

Copy the overlay’s output URL from the install controls. In OBS, add a Browser Source, paste the URL and match the width and height to the overlay.

  4. Decide who counts

Count yourself from the Vision editor, or invite a moderator who updates the counter from their own browser. With Vision’s chatbot, a command like !death can add 1 to the counter; limit it to moderators so viewers can’t spam it.

  5. Test before the run

Add a death, correct a mistake and check both in your OBS preview. Agree when the boss counter resets so the numbers stay honest.

Elden Ring death counter

Elden Ring streams live from boss attempts. Keep a total for the whole playthrough and a second counter for the boss you are stuck on – Malenia or the final bosses can easily take dozens of tries.

Reset only the boss counter when you win. A screenshot of the boss counter right after the kill is a good moment for a clip.

Dark Souls and Sekiro death counter

The same two-counter setup works for every Souls game. In Sekiro, decide before the stream whether a resurrection counts as a death or only a real death screen does, and stick to it.

Hollow Knight and Silksong death counter

Hollow Knight and Hollow Knight: Silksong mix long exploration with hard boss fights and platforming sections. A total counter plus a boss counter works well, and some streamers add a third counter for falls into spikes on the way back.

Minecraft Hardcore death counter

In Minecraft Hardcore one death ends the world, so count attempts instead: label the counter Worlds or Attempts and add 1 for every new world. For normal survival challenges, a regular death counter works as usual.

Celeste and Cuphead death counter

Celeste shows deaths per chapter in the game, so use your overlay for the total across the run. In Cuphead, a counter per boss keeps the pressure visible when one fight takes all evening.

Troubleshooting

If something is not working

  • The counter does not show in OBS? Check the output URL, the source size and whether the layer sits inside the overlay area.
  • The chat command does nothing? Check that the command targets the right Score layer and that the user has the role you allowed.
  • Two people counted the same death? Let one person count at a time and correct the number in Vision.

FAQ

Game death counters: common questions

Does the death counter count automatically?

No. Vision does not read deaths from the game. You, a moderator or a chat command updates the number.

Can my viewers add deaths through chat?

You decide. A chatbot command can be limited to moderators, VIPs or subscribers, with cooldowns, so the count stays accurate.

Can I keep the count across several streams?

Yes. The counter keeps its value until you change or reset it, so you continue the next stream where you stopped.

Does this work for any game?

Yes. The counter is part of your overlay, not the game, so it works for every game you stream – from soulslikes to rage games.
